The Cultural and Community Role of Scotland’s Bookshops

The Booksellers Association launched a new research report on ‘The Cultural and Community Role of Scotland’s Bookshops’ on 19th November, to coincide with Scottish Book Trust’s annual Book Week Scotland. The report spotlights the vital and growing role Scottish bookshops play as engines of local communities and national culture, while considering the barriers and suggested solutions to strengthen these important regional resources. The Booksellers Association worked directly with many of Scotland’s bookshop owners and teams to create the report.

One identified core value of Scottish bookshops is championing authors and creative events, amidst a backdrop of funding challenges. The report calls for stronger town centres and high streets to support thriving SMEs and retail, to continue to bring inspiring and entertaining author and illustrator events to 90% of Scottish bookshops.
